Rewards and Sanctions

At Somervale School we uphold the highest expectations for our students both inside our school and within our community. We know that by being consistent in these expectations around how we behave will ensure our students have the best opportunities to succeed and contribute positively to society.

Rewards

At Somervale we strongly believe in the importance of encouraging all students to achieve their potential.  In all classes, verbal encouragement, positive recognition and tangible rewards are used as essential tools to support students.

A school ethos of encouragement is central to the promotion of great behaviour.  Rewards are an integral means of achieving this.  They have a motivational role in helping students to recognise that good behaviour, self-awareness and responsibility to self and others is valued, and are clearly defined in the procedures.  Integral to the system of rewards is an emphasis on encouragement, both informal and formal to individuals and groups.

Students are rewarded for individual achievement, progress and attainment, demonstrating our core values of being Ready to Learn, Respectful to Others, ensuring a Safe Environment for All and to be ASPIRATIONAL in everything they do.  Our rewards structure has been developed in consultation with our students using student voice and student surveys, and is regularly reviewed.

We use a variety of rewards to reinforce this encouragement as follows;

  • Students who are working well will receive positive recognition in the form of verbal praise within the lesson.

  • Students receive House points for demonstrating our values within the lessons and around school.

  • Staff send home ‘Positive Postcards’ for students who have worked exceptionally well or whose behaviour has been above expectations.

  • Exceptionally positive behaviour is recognised by an Above and Beyond certificate that is presented to them by the Deputy Headteacher.

  • Each department awards a ‘Student of the Term’ for exceptional work and attitude, recognised by certificate.

  • Recognition of outstanding, excellent and improving attendance throughout the academic year

Sanctions

As represented by our core values it is important to us that our students make a positive contribution to their communities. By asking our students to follow some accepted behaviour norms of respect, we will ensure they are helping us develop a community based on mutual consideration and appreciation. More information relating to this can be found within our behaviour policy.

Our school aim is to prevent instances of poor behaviour through the provision and monitoring of an appropriate and relevant curriculum for all, and a supportive and responsive pastoral system.  Students are encouraged to have self-discipline, which is most effectively promoted through positive achievement and the development of self-worth.
