2018 Exam Results

Midsomer Norton Schools Partnership schools excel despite tougher exams.

Once again Norton Hill and Somervale posted some phenomenal GCSE results. Following the extremely strong A levels last week, students at both schools in the town have achieved some excellent outcomes.

At Somervale it was a similar story with nearly 60% of students achieving a grade 4 pass in both English and Maths. English was another success story with record numbers of 9 -7 grades being achieved. Other subject areas achieving record results were History with over 30% of students achieving a grade 9 - 7,  Computer Science with over 30% grade 9 -7  and BTEC Business studies with 50% of the grades Distinction* - Distinction.  VCERT Catering and Resistant Materials also performed extremely well along with IT BTEC achieving nearly 40% A* - A grades. The number of students achieving the top  grades of 7, 8 and 9 has continued to rise.

Headteacher Joanna Postlethwaite said “It has been another fantastic year at Somervale. I am so proud of the students and the level of hard work they put into achieving these results. Both the students and staff deserve to be very happy with their achievement. With such a lot of change in both the courses and the grading, it has been very reassuring to see that standards in the school have continued to rise.  We have our largest year group ever joining in September and I have no doubt that Somervale School will continue to go from strength to strength over the coming years”.

At Norton Hill, students produced another superb set of results with over 80% achieving a grade 4 pass in both English and Maths. This is equivalent to the old A*‐C measure. Even more impressive was the percentage of students achieving a grade 5 or above in both subjects, which currently stands at 55%. Nationally, the figure is thought to be around about 45% this year. In other areas of the curriculum, results were equally as impressive. Science saw 80% of grades at 4 or above, and most other subjects were above 75% grades 9-4. In the 5 9-4/A*‐C including English and Maths measure, the school again achieved incredible outcomes with over 80% achieving this gold standard. In terms of progress, Norton Hill expects to again be in the top 20% nationally.

Headteacher Gordon Green said “It is so rewarding when the months of hard work and exam preparation are reflected by such wonderful outcomes. I am deeply proud of the efforts from all the students and it is especially pleasing to realise such good outcomes from our disadvantaged children and those with a special educational need. Finally, a big thank you to all the staff at Norton Hill who work so hard each year to make a difference to the lives of our students and indeed the parents/carers who work in partnership with us.”
