Dyson Inspires Somervales’ Inventors of the Future
|
|
On 24th May, a small team from The Dyson Foundation visited Somervale School. 19 Year 8 students were invited to take part in a two hour long workshop with the Dyson team.
The students had the unique opportunity to find out how James Dyson started his company. His iconic career began from humble beginnings with a feeling of frustration of everyday designs not working as well are they should, an example being the humble wheel barrow. The captivated students were shown Dyson’s past and present designs, the rigorous stages of design development and testing as well as being shown all the procedures which happen before the products even appears in the shops.
The students were challenged to design something based on a ‘design frustration of theirs which solved a problem around the house’. The product had to incorporate the use of air or alternatively was powered by air.
In small teams, the students mind mapped ideas, sketched out their best designs and went on to build a prototype of their chosen idea. There were Dyson parts, cardboard and tape available.
After 40 minutes the small teams had produced designs for a waste system, a bin that sucked in, a hot air hair brush, a hair styling system and an alarm clock!
The students then presented their ideas to the rest of the group, explaining the features; how it might work and discussed any further developments that the design might need to enhance it further, reflective of actual industrial product development in the design & manufacturing process.
Dayna Walker from The Dyson Foundation stated; “We enjoyed an excellent workshop. We worked with great students who demonstrated amazing team work”.
Cathryn Ellett, Head of Technology at Somervale summarised; “It was a great experience for our students. The workshop was thoroughly enjoyed by all. I know from just speaking to the students after the workshop, how inspired they were, hopefully laying the foundations for some of their future career choices? We’d like to extend our thanks to The Dyson Foundation for taking the time to lead this fantastic hands-on workshop at our school”.

Midsomer Norton Cricket Club, through the ‘Chance to Shine’ project is currently running a Girls’ Cricket Club at Somervale School coached by England ODI and T20 international Fran Wilson. Fran also plays for Somerset. With Fran’s skill and expert tutoring, the school hopes to eventually see girls from Somervale and Midsomer Norton Cricket Club play at the same high standards as Fran. Fran is also coaching at the cricket club and has so far worked miracles with the U15s who are currently undefeated so far this season! Somervale is already celebrating one its students in the sport; Lauren Bowen-Jones, who is currently represents the county in the U13 team and is doing extremely well.
Teacher Steve Cox stated; “This is a fantastic chance for girls to participate in what was once a very male orientated sport. Under the expert coaching of Fran, we are sure that the girls will achieve great things within the sport of Cricket. The girls have already been entered into a local competition, which we wish them every success!”
Additionally to this, the Midsomer Norton Cricket Club hopes to run a girls’ team in the very near future and are asking for young female competitor’s to join them on Thursday evenings.

Bath Schools Centurion Book Awards
|
| During the afternoon of Thursday 18th April, a group of students from both Somervale and Norton Hill School, enjoyed a joint trip into Bath. Students from our library reading-group attended the annual Bath and North East Somerset Schools’ Centurion Book Awards Ceremony. This year, Hayesfield Upper School in Bath were hosting the event. We were greeted warmly by the students and taken to their school’s wonderful new Auditorium and entertained by visiting authors, David Gatward and Marie-Louise Jensen. Chair of the Council, Rob Appleyard, presented the first place award, which was won this year by R J Palacio for her book “Wonder”. Bath author Gill Lewis came second with her title “White Dolphin”, with the very popular locally-based author David Gatward placed third for his title “Doom Rider”. I would like to thank my reading-group students for giving up their time to read the books and attend meetings to vote on their favourite title. The students’ behaviour was fantastic and we all were immensely proud to be representing the schools! |
